M-ERA.NET Joint Call 2026 for Advanced Materials Research and Innovation

The M-ERA.NET Joint Call 2026 is a transnational funding opportunity for ambitious research and innovation projects in advanced materials. The call was launched on 4 March 2026 and brings together 34 funding agencies with an indicative overall budget of about 39 million €. Its purpose is to support collaborative international projects that strengthen Europe’s scientific excellence, technology leadership and global competitiveness in the field of advanced materials. The call is designed to fund research and innovation activities that address major industrial, technological, energy and environmental challenges through the development and application of advanced materials.

The call covers six thematic areas. Topic 1 focuses on materials for energy storage and distribution systems, including innovative materials, devices and systems for storing and distributing electrical, chemical, mechanical and thermal energy. Topic 2 addresses materials for energy conversion and supports advanced materials and processes that accelerate the energy transition across generation, conversion and mobility. Topic 3 is dedicated to innovative surfaces, coatings and interfaces, recognizing their importance as enabling technologies across many industrial sectors. Topic 4 supports innovative functional materials with defined architectures that provide specific properties and desired functionalities. Topic 5 targets materials addressing environmental challenges, with emphasis on reducing resource use and waste and increasing recyclability in line with decarbonization and circular economy goals. Topic 6 focuses on next generation materials for electronics, especially materials research and application with properties relevant to electronics.

The call follows a two-stage application process. Pre-proposals must be submitted by 12 May 2026, 12:00 noon Brussels time, and full proposals must be submitted by 18 November 2026, 12:00 noon Brussels time. Only project coordinators are asked to submit the proposal through the M-ERA.NET submission tool. The call also provides supporting documents and resources, including a Guide for Proposers, FAQs, mandatory proposal forms, a full-proposal annex and a final reporting template. Additional support is available through webinars, information sessions and partner search tools, including the M-ERA.NET Partner Search Facility and the Enterprise Europe Network partner search tool.

This funding opportunity is particularly relevant for transnational consortia working on advanced materials research and innovation with applications in energy, sustainability, coatings, functional materials and electronics. The call encourages international cooperation and alignment with national and regional regulations of participating countries and regions.

This funding opportunity represents an early draft that has not yet been officially approved by the European Commission. It is expected that details of the calls will change until finalization. The final, approved version is expected to be published by End of 2025. This draft is provided for informational purposes and may be used to preliminarily form consortia and develop project ideas, but it is offered without any guarantee.
