This call aims to improve the knowledge and modelling capacity regarding the use of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases (F-gases), focusing on mitigation pathways and their interaction with the decarbonisation of the energy system. Projects funded under this call are expected to provide improved regional pathways for the use and emissions of ODS and F-gases, assess options to mitigate their use, and explore how this interacts with energy system decarbonisation.
Projects should develop modelling tools that allow for national-level representation of the use of F-gases and their alternatives, especially in the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump sectors. This aims to support Parties to the Montreal Protocol in assessing policy options for ambitious implementation of the Kigali Agreement, including transitions to natural refrigerants, and understanding implications for the energy system.
Actions should expand and improve tools that provide detailed information at country level, including for Article 5 Parties under the Montreal Protocol, enhancing the knowledge base for implementing the Kigali Agreement and creating synergies with the Paris Agreement's climate mitigation goals.
Opening Date: 06 May 2025
Deadline: 24 September 2025
Expected Outcome
• Improved knowledge of regional pathways for ODS and F-gases use and emissions; improved modelling capacity in the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump sectors; enhanced availability of modelling tools for Parties to the Montreal Protocol; better understanding of interactions with energy system decarbonisation.
Scope
• Improve knowledge of regional pathways concerning the use of ODS and F-gases; develop mitigation pathways under baseline and ambitious scenarios; assess interaction with energy system decarbonisation; develop modelling tools for national-level representation of F-gases use and alternatives in the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump sectors.
