NFRF/NordForsk call: 2026 International Joint Initiative for Research Harnessing Disruptive Technologies to Address Global Challenges

Description

The NFRF–NordForsk Call 2026: International Joint Initiative for Research Harnessing Disruptive Technologies to Address Global Challenges supports ambitious, interdisciplinary research aimed at advancing disruptive technologies and applying them to major global societal challenges. The call encourages collaboration across sectors, disciplines, and participating countries to generate innovative knowledge, methods, and solutions with high scientific and societal impact.

Funding Amount

  • The Nordic partners of a project proposal can apply for a maximum of 17.1 MNOK in total.
  • The intention is to fund Nordic participation in 12 research projects.
  • Project duration: up to 36 months.
  • Earliest project start date: March 2027.

Important Dates

  • Contact list / matchmaking survey: Interested researchers should join NFRF’s contact list by completing the survey before 9 February 2026 to facilitate partner matching.
  • Call opens (notices of intent): January 2026.
  • Full application deadline: 3 November 2026 (full applications).

Eligibility

  • Primary eligible applicants: Research-performing organisations (universities, higher-education institutions, public research institutes) in NordForsk member countries/regions.
  • Permitted partners: Non-academic organisations (industry, public authorities, NGOs, community organisations) may participate subject to national funder rules and eligibility.
  • All Nordic applicants must comply with their national funding agency’s eligibility and financial rules.
  • Consortium requirements (Nordic applicants): Projects seeking NordForsk funding must include research partners from at least two different Nordic countries. One Nordic team member must act as Co-Principal Investigator in the international consortium.
  • International eligibility: Only projects including at least one eligible Canadian institution and at least one eligible partner from a NordForsk country will be considered.

Submission Conditions

  • Proposals must be submitted through the designated systems of NFRF and NordForsk.
  • All partners must adhere to their respective national and programme-level requirements.
  • Projects must demonstrate clear added value from Canada–Nordic collaboration.

  • São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP)—Brazil
  • Spanish State Research Agency (AEI)—Spain
  • Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)—Switzerland
  • National Science and Technology Council (NSTC)—Taiwan
  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)—United Kingdom

Expected Outcome

Funded projects are expected to deliver:

  • Breakthrough scientific knowledge and advances in disruptive technologies.
  • Novel methodologies, tools, and technologies applicable beyond the project context.
  • Strengthened research collaboration between Canada and NordForsk countries.
  • Ethical, responsible, and societally aligned development of disruptive technologies.
  • Meaningful contributions toward addressing identified global societal challenges.

Scope

The call focuses on research that investigates, advances, or applies disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology, advanced materials, and related emerging fields. Projects must integrate interdisciplinary perspectives and demonstrate clear relevance to global challenges, including but not limited to climate resilience, public health, sustainable development, democratic stability, digital security, and social well-being.
