The Research Framework Programme for IT Security follows the successful programme 'Self-Determined and Secure in the Digital World 2015-2020'. The previous programme saw significant investments, leading to the establishment of national competence centres for IT security and major projects in Industry 4.0. With this new programme, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aims to continue strengthening IT security research from 2021 to 2026. The programme acknowledges the increasing importance of cybersecurity in a rapidly digitalizing world. It is designed to enhance technological sovereignty, ensuring robust protection against cyber threats at national and European levels. Key focus areas include data security, privacy, democracy protection, and fostering innovation in cybersecurity. The programme integrates with various national and EU-level digitalization strategies and fosters collaboration among academia, industry, and governmental institutions. Funding will be allocated to research projects that advance cybersecurity technologies, support the development of secure IT infrastructures, and contribute to international cybersecurity efforts. The initiative also seeks to establish strong ties with the EU Cybersecurity Competence Center (EUCCC) to enhance European cybersecurity capabilities.
