Overall Description

Resilient Economy and Security through Ecosystem Transitions (RESET) – Strategic Research Projects is a funding opportunity supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

The call supports research projects that will improve understanding of how, when and why ecosystems transition, reorganise or collapse, and how these changes affect ecosystem functions, economic prosperity, societal resilience and national security.

The projects form part of the wider Resilient Economy and Security through Ecosystem Transitions (RESET) programme, which aims to generate the knowledge, evidence, tools and approaches needed to anticipate and respond to ecosystem transitions at local-to-global scales, enabling decisions and actions that sustain ecosystem functions and strengthen prosperity, resilience and security.

Funding Amount

  • Total funding available: £15 million;
  • Maximum project cost: £2.5 million FEC;
  • Funding rate: Normally 80% of FEC;
  • Maximum standard UKRI contribution: Approximately £2 million per project;
  • Maximum project duration: 3 years.

Submission Deadlines

  • Opening: 13 August 2026, 09:00 UK time;
  • Notification of Intent: 16 September 2026, 16:00 UK time (optional);
  • Full application deadline: 22 October 2026, 16:00 UK time;
  • Project start: By 14 February 2027.

Submission Conditions

  • Apply through the UKRI Funding Service;
  • Lead must be based at an eligible UK research organisation;
  • Project must address at least one RESET research theme;
  • Projects must work closely with the RESET Hub and wider programme;
  • Overseas research must demonstrate benefits for UK sustainable growth and security;
  • Project leads must participate in the Distributed Peer Review (DPR) process;
  • Applicants may participate in no more than two applications across this call and the related RESET Hub call, with only one as project lead.

Eligible Types of Applicants

Eligible leads:

  • UK research organisations eligible for NERC funding;
  • Eligible Public Sector Research Establishments (PSREs);
  • Eligible Independent Research Organisations (IROs);
  • Eligible research groups and individual researchers.

Other participants may include:

  • UK research collaborators;
  • Eligible international project co-leads;
  • Businesses and financial-sector organisations as project partners;
  • Other UK or international project partners;
  • Subcontractors.

Businesses cannot lead the application unless they independently qualify as an eligible NERC research organisation.

Eligible Countries

  • Lead applicant: United Kingdom;
  • International project co-leads: Permitted subject to NERC eligibility rules;
  • International project partners: Permitted;
  • Research location: UK or international;
  • International projects must demonstrate relevance to UK sustainable growth and security.

Expected Outcome

Projects should generate:

  • New understanding of ecosystem transitions and resilience;
  • Evidence on impacts on economic prosperity, national security and society;
  • Approaches to manage transitions and minimise risks;
  • Evidence, methods and models usable by the wider RESET programme;
  • Knowledge supporting UK and international biodiversity action.

Scope

Projects must undertake interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research addressing one or more of three themes:

  • Predicting ecosystem change and transitions;
  • Understanding ecosystem change through cascading risks;
  • Building ecosystem resilience.

Eligible research environments include:

  • Terrestrial ecosystems;
  • Freshwater ecosystems;
  • Terrestrial-marine transitional environments;
  • Coastal seas.

Projects may study UK or international ecosystems. Overseas research must demonstrate relevance to UK sustainable growth and security.

Out of scope: projects primarily focused on urban built-up areas, intensive farming/aquaculture, intensive commercial forestry, active mining, oil/gas extraction or major infrastructure.
