Seed grants for companies (Fræ/Thróunarfræ)

Overall Description

The Seed Grants for Companies (Fræ/Þróunarfræ) provide early-stage financial support to young start-up companies and individuals developing innovative projects.

The programme has two components:

  • Fræ (Seed): A preparation grant for projects at the conceptual or early development stage.
  • Þróunarfræ (Development Seed): A preliminary grant for collaborative development projects.

Funding Amount

  • Maximum grant: ISK 2 million per project
  • Required matching funding: None
  • Funding rate: Up to 100% of the supported project costs
  • Total funding available: Not specified

Funding is competitive and is awarded under the Technology Development Fund’s rules on minor financial assistance.

Submission Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis, with no fixed final deadline.

Submitted applications are evaluated and grant decisions are announced at least twice per year. The timing of an application may therefore determine the assessment round in which it is considered.

Submission Conditions

  • Applications must be submitted through the Rannís online application portal.
  • The applicant must be an individual or a company established less than five years ago.
  • The proposed activity must correspond to either:
    • An early-stage or conceptual innovation project under Fræ; or
    • A preliminary collaborative development project under Þróunarfræ.
  • Applications are evaluated competitively by the Technology Development Fund.
  • Successful applicants must complete the project and submit a results report within 12 months of the project start.
  • The grant is subject to the Technology Development Fund’s minor-assistance rules.
  • No applicant co-financing or matching contribution is required.

  • Individuals
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Start-up companies
  • Young innovation companies established less than five years ago

Universities, established companies older than five years and research institutions are not identified as direct applicants for this particular grant category.

Eligible Countries

  • Iceland.
  • The programme is a domestic Icelandic innovation funding and is administered through the Icelandic Centre for Research. Applicants must be eligible to apply through the Icelandic Rannís system.

Expected Outcome

The funded project should produce sufficient preparatory work to clarify the project concept, assess its development potential or establish the basis for a larger collaborative development project.

Grant recipients must submit a report describing the project’s activities and results within 12 months of the project start date.

Scope

Fræ supports preparatory work required to develop an early-stage idea or concept into a more clearly defined innovation project.

Þróunarfræ supports preliminary work for cooperative development projects. It enables applicants to explore and prepare collaborative projects involving the development of new solutions or technologies.

The programme is administered under the Technology Development Fund and focuses on innovation projects at a very early stage.
