SHENG 4: Polish-Chinese Funding Initiative

The SHENG 4 call is a collaborative funding initiative between the National Science Centre (NCN) of Poland and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). It aims to support joint Polish-Chinese research projects in specified scientific disciplines.

This call text lays down the terms for awarding funding for research tasks carried out by Polish research teams under Polish and Chinese research projects. The terms for awarding funding for research tasks carried out by the Chinese research teams under SHENG 4 are laid down by the NSFC.

Funding Amount per Project: The NCN has allocated a total of PLN 46,000,000 for Polish research teams participating in SHENG 4. Specific funding per project will depend on the individual project requirements and evaluations.

Submission Deadlines: Proposals must be submitted electronically via the OSF submission system by 17 March 2025, 4 p.m. CET.

Submission Conditions:

  • Joint Proposal: Polish and Chinese teams must collaboratively prepare a Joint Project Description (JPD) and CVs with publication lists for all principal and co-investigators.
  • Language: All joint documents should be in English.
  • Budget Calculation: The budget for the Polish part of the project should be calculated using the exchange rate published by the National Bank of Poland on the date of the NCN Council Resolution for SHENG 4, where EUR 1 = PLN 4.3365.
  • Evaluation Criteria: Proposals will be assessed based on:
    • Project Assessment (65%): Scientific quality, feasibility, and potential impact.
    • Qualifications of Researchers (35%): Achievements of the principal investigator and co-investigators.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include entities specified in Article 27 (1) of the NCN Act, such as:

  • Universities.
  • Federations of science and higher education institutions.
  • Research institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
  • International research institutes operating in Poland.
  • The Łukasiewicz Centre and its affiliated institutes.
  • The Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.
  • Other entities conducting independent and continuous research activities.

The call is specifically for collaborative projects between research teams based in Poland and China.

Expected Outcome

The initiative aims to foster high-quality research through international collaboration, enhancing scientific advancements in the specified fields and strengthening Polish-Chinese research partnerships.

Scope

SHENG 4 focuses on funding basic research projects conducted collaboratively by Polish and Chinese research teams. Eligible disciplines include:

  • Life Sciences: All fields (NZ1-NZ9).
  • Physical Sciences and Engineering: Selected disciplines such as Chemistry (ST4), Computer Science and Information Technologies (ST5), Production and Process Engineering (ST8), and Materials Engineering (ST11).
  • Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences: Selected disciplines focusing on human nature and society (HS6_01-HS6_08, HS6_14-HS6_15).
