Support for researchers to apply to European Research Council (ERC) programs

Description

The Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) runs this programme to support Croatian researchers in preparing applications to the European Research Council (ERC) programmes: Starting Grant (StG), Consolidator Grant (CoG), Advanced Grant (AdG), and Synergy Grant (SyG).
It provides funding for short-term study visits to ERC project leaders at their host institutions, with the aim of enhancing applicants’ research skills, international experience, and competitiveness in ERC calls.

Funding Amount

  • Per project:
    • €2,000/month net stipend for accommodation and subsistence.
    • Travel cost: return ticket to the host institution.
  • Project duration: 1–4 months.

Submission Deadlines

  • Permanently open call with fixed deadlines:
    • 5 Sept 2023, 5 Jan 2024, 5 May 2024, 5 Sept 2024, 5 Jan 2025, 5 May 2025, 5 Sept 2025
    • Submission closes at 23:59 CEST on each deadline.
  • Support must start in the same calendar year as the submission deadline.

Eligible Types of Organizations

  • Applicant organization: Research organization in Croatia that is an eligible ERC host institution.
  • Host organization abroad: Must host an ongoing ERC project and be located in an EU Member State or Horizon 2020 associated country.
  • Only one project application per applicant per deadline.

 

Expected Outcome

  • Strengthened competencies of Croatian researchers for ERC application preparation.
  • Submission of an ERC proposal by the visiting researcher at the first available ERC call after the visit (and, if unsuccessful, a re-submission to the next eligible call).
  • Development of long-term international research cooperation and increased success of Croatian institutions in securing ERC funding.

Scope

  • Supports short-term (1–4 months) research visits by Croatian researchers to ERC project leaders.
  • Aimed at building collaboration, gaining first-hand ERC project experience, and developing a competitive ERC proposal.
  • Open to all scientific fields.
  • Host institutions must be in EU Member States or Horizon 2020 associated countries.
  • The visit must be to an ERC project leader whose grant type matches the applicant’s intended ERC application category.
