This call seeks to demonstrate cost-efficient and sustainable production processes for battery-grade metals, precursors, or electrode active materials essential for Li-ion batteries. Projects should focus on refining raw materials like lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, manganese, and phosphorus from primary sources such as ores and brines or secondary sources like mining waste and manufacturing scraps within the EU or associated countries. The proposed processes should be ready for large-scale adoption and aim to strengthen the European battery value chain, increase processing and refining capacities, and promote circular battery value chains in line with the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act and the Batteries Regulation. Additionally, projects should evaluate societal acceptance by involving stakeholders affected by the processing activities and demonstrate potential to reduce environmental and social barriers to deploying new production facilities.
Opening Date: 06 May 2025
Deadline: 16 September 2025
Expected Outcome
The expected outcomes include achieving strategic autonomy for the EU in battery raw materials, increasing processing and refining capacities within the EU, demonstrating advanced and sustainable refining technologies, promoting circular battery value chains and compliance with regulations, and improving societal acceptance of processing plants.
Scope
The call focuses on demonstrating sustainable production of battery-grade materials, focusing on refining lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, manganese, and phosphorus, using primary and secondary raw materials sourced from the EU, ensuring processes are ready for large-scale adoption, and evaluating societal acceptance by involving affected stakeholders.
