Top Citizen Science (FWF)

Description

The Top Citizen Science programme supports research projects that actively involve citizens in the scientific process, enabling them to contribute data, observations, knowledge, or experiences.

It is designed as an extension (“expansion project”) to an existing FWF-funded research project, ensuring high scientific quality while promoting public engagement in research.

Funding Amount

  • Maximum funding per project: €100,000
  • Project duration: up to 24 months

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 13 January 2026
  • Submission deadline: 7 April 2026 (14:00 Vienna time)

Submission Conditions

  • Submission via FWF online portal (elane)
  • Key requirements:
    • Applicant must be:
      • Principal investigator or staff member of an ongoing FWF project
    • Existing project must:
      • Still be active at the time of funding decision (October 2026)
    • Project must be carried out at an:
      • Austrian research institution with appropriate infrastructure
    • Applicant must demonstrate:
      • Relevant citizen science expertise
  • Evaluation:
    • Based on international peer review and decision by the Scientific Board

Eligible Types of Applicants

  • Universities
  • Non-university research institutions
  • Research-performing organisations

Important:

  • Only researchers already holding an FWF-funded project are eligible to apply

Eligible Countries

  • Projects must be conducted at an Austrian research institution

Expected Outcome

  • Generation of additional scientific knowledge through citizen contributions
  • Improved quality and scope of research results
  • Strengthened interaction between science and society
  • Increased public understanding and engagement with research

Scope

The call funds citizen science activities embedded in ongoing research projects, including:

  • Participation of citizens in data collection, analysis, or interpretation
  • Engagement of knowledge communities (e.g. experts, schools, civil society)
  • Integration of diverse societal groups (including youth) into research

Projects must:

  • Build on an existing FWF-funded project still ongoing at the time of decision
  • Expand the original project through meaningful citizen participation
