Description
The WEAVE initiative is a cross-European collaboration framework developed by several research funding organisations and embedded in Science Europe. It supports excellent collaborative research projects across national and regional borders in Europe.
Under the Lead Agency principle, a research team from two or three participating countries or regions submits one joint project proposal to a single funding organisation (the Lead Agency). The Lead Agency manages the administrative procedure and scientific evaluation, while each participating funding organisation funds the researchers from its own country or region.
The initiative aims to simplify submission and evaluation procedures for international research collaboration and contribute to strengthening the European Research Area (ERA).
Funding Amount
Funding for the Flemish partners follows the standard FWO regulations for fundamental research projects.
- Indicative funding conditions include:
- Minimum funding: €50,000 per year for the entire project.
- Maximum funding: €145,000 per year per Flemish or federal research institution.
- Equipment funding: up to €150,000 per project.
- Project duration: typically 2–4 years when FWO acts as Lead Agency.
- If German researchers (DFG) are involved, the maximum duration is 3 years.
Each participating funding organisation finances its own national research team.
Submission Deadlines
- Call opening: 15 January 2026
- Internal institutional deadlines: March 2026
- Final submission deadline: 1 April 2026 (17:00 CET)
- Rebuttal phase: 10–21 September 2026
- Panel meetings: 19–30 October 2026
- Announcement of results: 11 December 2026
- Project start date: 1 January 2027 (Flemish side)
Eligible Types of Applicants
- Universities in Flanders
- Other research institutions eligible under the FWO regulations for fundamental research projects
- Applications are submitted through the host institution of the Flemish supervisor-spokesperson.
Eligible Countries
In the framework of the Weave initiative, the FWO has a bilateral agreement with the following partners:
- AUSTRIA through FWF (Austrian Science Fund)
- FRENCH-SPEAKING COMMUNITY OF BELGIUM through F.R.S.-FNRS (Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique)
- GERMANY through DFG (German Research Foundation)
- LUXEMBOURG through FNR (National Research Fund)
- POLAND through NCN (National Science Center)
- NETHERLANDS through NWO (Dutch Research Council) (Weave pilot phase)
- SLOVENIA through ARIS (Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency)
- SWEDEN through Formas (Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development)
- SWITZERLAND through SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation)
In practice this means that researchers who are eligible at the FWO can submit at the FWO a joint bilateral or trilateral project with researchers from Austria (FWF), the French-speaking Community of Belgium (F.R.S.-FNRS), Germany (DFG), Luxembourg (FNR), Netherlands (NWO, please be aware: pilot phase, only bilateral projects possible), Poland (NCN), Slovenia (ARIS), Sweden (Formas) and/or Switzerland (SNSF).
Submission Conditions
- A single joint proposal must be submitted via the FWO e-portal using the specific WEAVE application form (FWO as Lead Agency).
- The Lead Agency (FWO) is responsible for the evaluation and administrative process.
- Each participating funding organisation finances its own national research team.
- An administrative submission to the partner funding organisation is also required for each foreign partner.
- The eligibility criteria, budget rules, and institutional requirements follow the FWO regulations for Junior and Senior Research Projects for fundamental research.
Expected Outcome
The programme aims to:
- Facilitate cross-border collaboration in fundamental research across Europe.
- Enable joint research projects between research teams from multiple European countries.
- Simplify the application and evaluation process through the Lead Agency model with a single evaluation procedure.
- Strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) by increasing integration of national research funding schemes.
Scope
The programme supports bi- or trilateral collaborative research projects in fundamental research between Flemish researchers and European partners participating in the WEAVE initiative.
Projects are submitted through FWO’s funding channel for regular fundamental research projects when FWO acts as the Lead Agency. The evaluation and administration are therefore carried out by FWO according to the procedures for Junior and Senior Research Projects for fundamental research.
