Description
The WEAVE initiative is a collaboration framework between several European research funding organisations that enables internationally collaborative research projects to be submitted and evaluated through a single evaluation procedure under the “Lead Agency” principle.
Within this framework, the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) can participate either as the Lead Agency or as a Partner Agency. When FWO acts as a Partner Agency, the proposal is evaluated by another participating research funder, while FWO funds the Flemish part of the project if it is successful.
The initiative supports fundamental research projects involving research teams from at least two participating countries and aims to facilitate cross-border scientific collaboration while reducing administrative burden by avoiding parallel evaluation processes.
Funding Amount
Funding for the Flemish partner follows the standard FWO funding scheme for fundamental research projects (Junior and Senior Research Projects).
Indicative funding parameters include:
- Minimum funding: approximately €50,000 per year for the entire project.
- Maximum funding: approximately €145,000 per year per participating institution.
- Project duration: typically 2–4 years (depending on the Lead Agency programme).
Each participating funding organisation finances its own national research teams.
Submission Deadlines
- Timeline when FWO as Partner Agency: the Lead Agency’s procedure and timing apply.
- Although some research funders with whom the FWO has a bilateral agreement in principle have a system of continuous submission, ‘cut off’ dates apply to Weave projects in which a Flemish partner is involved:
