WEAVE – SNSF April Call (2026) – FNRS Participation

 

Description

The WEAVE initiative is a European funding framework that enables cross-border collaboration between researchers funded by different national research agencies through a single joint evaluation procedure.

Within this framework, the Fund for Scientific Research – FNRS participates as a partner agency in the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) “Encouragement de projets” call. Researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB) may collaborate with Swiss partners in joint research proposals submitted to the SNSF. If the proposal is selected, each national funding organisation finances its respective research team.

The programme aims to strengthen international scientific collaboration and high-quality fundamental research between Belgium (FWB) and Switzerland.

Funding Amount

FNRS funds the Belgian (FWB) partner’s share of the project budget.

Maximum FNRS funding depends on project duration and number of institutions involved:

Eligible costs include:

  • Personnel
  • Equipment
  • Operational expenses

Eligible costs must comply with the FNRS Practical Guide to Costs.

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening (FNRS platform): 16 February 2026
  • Submission to SNSF (lead agency): 1 April 2026
  • FNRS administrative submission deadline: 8 April 2026 at 14:00 (Brussels time)
  • Project start date: 1 January 2027 for projects submitted to the April call.

Eligible Types of Applicants

Applicants requesting FNRS funding must be researchers affiliated with institutions in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and eligible under FNRS regulations.

Eligible profiles include:

  • Postdoctoral researchers (R2)
  • Researchers with permanent research status (R3)
  • Senior research positions (R4).

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the FNRS WEAVE regulations and collaborate with researchers funded by SNSF.

Eligible Countries

The specific call supports collaboration between:

  • Belgium (Wallonia-Brussels Federation) – funded by FNRS
  • Switzerland – funded by SNSF

Projects may involve additional partners from other Weave partner agencies depending on the consortium structure.

Submission Conditions

Key submission conditions include:

  • Proposals must be submitted through the SNSF submission system (mySNF) by the consortium coordinator when SNSF acts as the lead agency.
  • FNRS applicants must also submit an administrative application via the FNRS e-space platform within 7 days after the SNSF deadline.
  • Applicants must select the funding instrument “WEAVE-SNSF-AVRIL” when submitting to FNRS.
  • Proposals are evaluated through a single international peer-review process conducted by the lead agency (SNSF).
  • Each funding organisation funds its national research team according to its own rules.

Expected Outcome

The programme aims to:

  • Promote international collaboration between researchers in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Switzerland.
  • Support high-quality fundamental research projects evaluated through a joint international review process.
  • Strengthen European research integration and cross-border scientific partnerships.
  • Enable researchers to develop long-term collaborative research programmes.

Scope

The call supports bilateral or trilateral collaborative research projects between researchers affiliated with FNRS-eligible institutions and researchers funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) (and potentially other Weave partners).

Projects must:

  • Address fundamental research topics across all scientific disciplines.
  • Be jointly developed and submitted under the WEAVE Lead Agency model, where one funding organisation (here typically SNSF) manages the scientific evaluation of the proposal.

The aim is to facilitate high-quality international research collaboration while reducing administrative burden through a single evaluation process.
