BattFutur is a national BMBF call to fund independent young investigator groups (“Nachwuchsgruppen”) in battery research at German universities and non-university research organisations. The programme strengthens career paths for excellent post-docs, opens options in academia and industry, and—where appropriate—supports spin-out preparation. Projects must be application-oriented and can range from applied fundamental research with a clear industrial perspective to scaling research that advances processes and technologies towards higher TRLs (up to TRL 8). Topical focus spans the full battery value chain for rechargeable electrochemical storage (Li-ion and alternatives) with use cases in e-mobility, stationary storage and other industrial applications. Research priorities follow the BMBF Battery Research Umbrella Concept: (1) materials and production process research; (2) scaling and digitalisation; (3) resource-efficient battery cycles; (4) promising future technology variants. Strong interaction with industry is expected via patrons/industrial advisory boards, early transfer planning and technology exploitation; proximity and cooperation with pilot lines in Germany—including Forschungsfertigung Batteriezelle (FFB) Münster—are explicitly encouraged.

Eligibility: Host is a German university or non-university research institution; the grant is person-linked to the group leader. Companies are not eligible as applicants. Targeted candidates are excellent post-docs (PhD completed) with demonstrated independent research ability; typically ~2 years post-doc experience at project start. With the 2025 amendment, the window after PhD extends to six years (with standard allowances for childcare/caregiving). International experience is expected; non-German candidates may apply (English sketch permitted plus a German summary). The host institution must provide a binding support letter and the required infrastructure. An industrial letter of intent demonstrating interest and advisory involvement is mandatory.

Funding: Non-repayable grant for up to 5 years; max 2.150.000 Euro per project (100% funding for non-economic research). Additional options: up to 250.000 Euro extra for material/consumables when scaling innovative cell manufacturing steps at FFB or German pilot lines; after a positive mid-term review, up to 40.000 Euro for start-up preparation (coaching, studies, external advice). Personnel typically covers group lead (E14/E15), one post-doc (E13/E14), up to three PhD candidates (E13) and one technician; student assistants are possible. Travel up to 35.000 Euro plus up to 20.000 Euro for international stays and incoming guests; certified German courses for non-German PIs up to 2.500 Euro. Equipment should generally be provided by the host; specific investments only in justified exceptions. Open Science and science communication activities are expected.

Procedure: Two-stage process (project sketch, then full proposal upon invitation). Three cut-off dates for sketches: 15 Nov 2023, 15 Nov 2024, 15 Nov 2025. Evaluation uses written peer review and an interview step assessing leadership potential, motivation and scientific excellence. The guideline is valid until 31 Dec 2034.
