The report “Mapping Portugal’s Startup Landscape 2024”, produced by IDC, Informa D&B, and Startup Portugal, highlights the remarkable growth of Portugal’s startup ecosystem. In 2024, the number of startups increased by 16%, bringing the total to 4,719. This growth reflects a vibrant and supportive business environment that has evolved significantly in recent years.
The technology sector remains the dominant force within the ecosystem, with 63% of startups focused on information and communication technology (ICT). A key highlight is the strong export orientation of these companies: one-third of Portuguese startups generate 58% of their revenue from international markets, far exceeding the national average. Total revenue from startups reached €2.6 billion in 2024, of which €1.5 billion came from exports.
Startups are also a driving force in employment, creating over 26,000 jobs in 2024. Employment in the startup sector grew by 19%, substantially higher than the national average of 4%. The tech sector offers competitive salaries, with an average monthly wage of €2,000—72% higher than the national median—making Portugal attractive for both talent and entrepreneurs.
The report highlights the significant role of government initiatives, including tax incentives and investments in sustainable technology and infrastructure. Cities like Lisbon and Porto stand out as hubs for innovation and networking, further boosting the ecosystem’s appeal.
With its strategic location, highly skilled workforce, and access to EU funding, Portugal is cementing its position as a leading hub for technological innovation in Europe. The combination of economic advantages and a supportive framework makes Portugal an ideal destination for entrepreneurs with global ambitions.
