Result description
As the immaculate PET surface does not need to be exposed just before treatment, it opens doors to deposition structures of higher resolution or the deposition of thin ultra barrier layers. This last has first been proven with the PECVD SiN process in the Clean4Yield project and with other deposition processes since. A collaboration with Fraunhofer FEP led to a patented barrier solution.
This collaboration allowed the pilot production of a more cost effective barrier solution thereby enabling the growth of thin film PV applications which need encapsulation.
Subsequent developments with PiScale and OLEDSOLAR have led to successful scale up of this film grade and evolved with UV absorption to accommodate O-PV cell requirements. Currently with the BOOSTER project working on the barrier film to enhance the life time of O-PV modules to the point they are competing with the incumbent c-Si PV cells.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Production of the PCS substrate has been scaled up and is currently being developed for application in barrier films for O-PV encapsulation in particular (improved resistance to environmental exposure)
The PET film product PCS is been developed and manufactured on the pilot line and scaled up to a wide industrial scale BOPET line. A similar partner is identified who can scale up the barrier production from a pilot production stage. As production volume increases with forecasts of 1-5M m2 prices are expected to drop and meet target costs required by the thin film PV industry to compete with/ replace the incumbent c-Si PV solution which has a much higher Carbon payback time.
The PCS product can be subtly adapted for different end-use requirements (such as thickness, UV absorption, hydrolyis resistance, hard coating) but the essential property of a clean defect free surface stays the same. Applications could be extended to other markets than barrier films needing a defect free surface or e.g. those needing a sterile surface (medical)
PET is inherent sustainable solution.Waste of PCS production can be recycled internally and from end products the PET content can be extracted for recovery and re-use. The larger the volume as the applications grow (eg with the need for green energy) the more feasible this recovery becomes.
