Result description
This professional development resource supports secondary school teacher training on climate and Earth system modelling. Developed within ESM2025 in collaboration with the Office for Climate Education, it provides a 3-hour workshop format combining two complementary activities: a board game that introduces how models represent the Earth system and its interacting components, and a multimedia animation that explores climate projections, scenarios, mitigation and adaptation, including the Urban Heat Island effect. The resource helps teachers understand what models are, how they are built and used, and how assumptions and scenarios influence projected outcomes. It emphasises key concepts such as systems thinking, feedbacks, uncertainty, scientific consensus, and the distinction between scenarios and projections. Designed for use in teacher professional development, it offers clear guidance, required materials and pedagogical framing, enabling educators to translate complex climate modelling concepts into effective classroom activities grounded in up-to-date science.
