The COGNITUS codec addresses new market needs to encode UHD HDR video streams in HEVC standard. It makes careful compromises between complexity and coding efficiency, enabling high quality coding on general purpose computers very effectively. The codec was designed completely from scratch, making full use of the state-of-the-art C++ constructs and fast processing optimisations to enable delivery in the high quality content. It is fully compatible with Main and Main10 HEVC profiles, and aim to provide compression efficiency as close as possible to the HEVC theoretical limits, while providing the speed, low complexity and toolset of practical codec implementations. The codec is optimised for ‘contribution’ and ‘distribution’ scenarios in broadcast workflows. With its flexible structure, the codec is easy to adapt, and can be easily customised and is one of the first HEVC implementations to support HDR HLG specification. It is very scalable, and can be deployed on cloud architectures thanks to the many parallelisation features it offers at different levels of granularity (including blocks, frames or chunks).

Deployments were launched at high profile cultural entertainment and sports events across both countries.
