Result description
Transport infrastructures (railway and road networks) are typically designed to be in operation for over 100 years. Planning and design of new infrastructures, or the assessment of existing ones, must rely on sound projections of climate and on estimations of associated potential risks and impacts to ensure safe and profitable use of them.
This tool allows analysis, impact assessments and planning measures for climate adaptation of transport infrastructures. Target audiences are public administrations, transport infrastructure service providers, railway managers and operators, traffic authorities. The main characteristics are:
- Hazards covered: heat, flood, heavy rain, landslide, ice and snow.
- Infrastructures covered: roads, highways and drainage systems.
- Indicators include: closure of transport infrastructure services and repairs due to climatic conditions
- Adaptation measures proposed: material specifications, subsurface conditions, cross section and standard dimensions, re-vegetating.
The Transport Module included in the Climate Services Information System (CSIS) offers its users the possibility of managing vulnerable infrastructures from transport networks (roads and railways). This goal is achieved by an easy to use web-based GIS tool that allows both engineers and personnel related with the maintenance and planning of road infrastructures to assess Climate risks for a variety of Climate Hazards. It allows them to automatically assess the future hazards, exposure, impact and relevant adaptation options in a selected study area.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Grants and Subsidies
- Business partners – SMEs, Entrepreneurs, Large Corporations
- Expanding to more markets /finding new customers
- Other type of Investment
A company or public organisation in charge of the management of transport infrastructures that is interested in using the Transport Module as is or adapting it for the use in their network by adjusting the hazards, elements at risk, impact indicators or adaptation options.
- Public or private funding institutions
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- Other Actors who can help us fulfil our market potential
- Private Investors
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
We are currently developing the demonstrator that will be capable of automatically assessing several hazards on exposed infrastructures, and related impacts on a section of the A2 Highway in Spain.
- Exposed elements, upload and update: operative, in validation.
- Vulnerability analysis: operative, in validation.
- Representation of Hazard evolution: in development.
- Adaptation options: in development.
