The Design Principles and Methods Toolkit is the collective output of the SySTEM 2020 consortium: researchers and practitioners in non-formal education across Europe and Israel/Palestine and is a guiding set of principles to support equity in science education.
The process to develop the toolkit was led by Aalto University in Finland, who ran a collection of co-design workshops to identify barriers that prevent science education being accessible for all. Following the identification of barriers, Aalto led a co-design process involving all partners and third parties to address these barriers and design, deliver and improve science learning activities that foster equitable science engagement opportunities among diverse learners.
The Toolkit is divided into subsections; (1) design for everyone (2) design for experience (3) design for growth, which address different stages of learning activity design and delivery. Each subsection includes a number of principles, case studies, and tips written by SySTEM 2020 consortium members. The Toolkit is useful to guide practice, to develop training and to reflect on organisational approaches to equitable learning.
