Galileo OSNMA: implementation, usage and related know-how for secure positioning and navigation

The FGI-OSNMA software (SW) package includes an implementation of OSNMA as a python library and useful accompanying tools that make it easy to use the library for different purposes. In particular, FGI-OSNMA includes the following tools:

  1. osnma-cli: a script to easily execute OSNMA from a command-line interface.
  2. osnma-reporter: graphically displays OSNMA operational information in a timeline (e.g. valid/failed authentications, dropped messages, CRC errors, etc.) and computes key performance indicators (e.g. percentage of authenticated subframes, time to first authenticated fix, etc.).
  3. osnma-rinex-filter: removes non-authenticated Galileo navigation messages from RINEX navigation files, and the corresponding measurements from RINEX observables files.

Current stage description

FGI-OSNMA is currently being used to:

  1. Perform OSNMA performance analysis studies and report the results in scientific publications.
  2. Remove non-authenticated Galileo navigation messages from RINEX navigation files and their correspondig measurements from RINEX observables files. This is being used to compute authenticated positions and reference trajectories in off-line processing.
  3. Integrate OSNMA status monitoring capabilities in GNSS-Finland, Finland’s GNSS signal quality monitoring system.

The next step will be the release of FGI-OSNMA as open source, together with a publication explainig in detail its architecture and accompanying tools.

There are other open source implementations of OSNMA, each with its own features.

FGI holds a strong expertise in different geo-spatial activities, and in particular in relation to satelite-based positioning and navigation. FGI’s actual know-how encompasses the use of the most up-to-date services and the participation in efforts towards accurate and resilient GNSS-based positioning, especially leveraging Galileo, and has an extensive portfolio of projects and activities in which it is continuing this trend. Being early adopters and implementers of OSNMA, FGI can participate in activities as consultant and/or expert on OSNMA matters, as well as on GNSS resilience and any other aspect related to satellite based positioning.
