Result description
An EEG system combined with portable diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound for measurement of brain activity and stimulation of deep brain regions for cognitive neuroscientists who seek to extend their understanding of brain functions.
AEGEUS aims to develop a groundbreaking diagnostic and therapeutic device for neurological use, combining advanced ultrasound imaging and targeted brain stimulation with EEG-based neural activity monitoring. The first goal is to create a novel ultrasound-based functional imaging method that, together with EEG, enables high spatiotemporal resolution of brain activity. While EEG captures signals near the skull, ultrasound provides access to deeper brain regions. The second core function is focused ultrasound stimulation, allowing precise neuromodulation of abnormal activity, potentially within a closed-loop system. The envisioned wearable headset integrates EEG sensors and ultrasound transceivers, supported by custom hardware, software, and algorithms to merge both data streams into unprecedented neuroimaging. A proof-of-concept study will assess its usability in healthy individuals and epilepsy patients during clinical and cognitive testing. This noninvasive, cost-effective device promises faster diagnosis and treatment, revolutionizing care for neurological disorders and opening new avenues in cognitive neuroscience.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
At project end, there will be a prototype of the combined EEG and US device for functional imaging of the brain and neurostimulation. We are are looking for new research partners to join a follow up project. The goal of such a project will be the evaluation and validation of the combined EEG/US prototype whose technical feasibility has been demonstrated in the AEGEUS project.
During the project we have built a prototype of the system. It can be replicated.
