The INHERIT Model includes (1) an integrated conceptual framework, including an analytical model, a governance model and an action and evaluation model (2) a set of qualitative and quantitative indicators and (3) a set of health, environment and social impact assessment tools and cost-effectiveness methods. The model provides the building blocks for all research strands throughout the INHERIT project. More generally, it can foster dialogue across sectors of how interventions can meet multiple societal goals, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. It can guide intersectoral action by helping to screen for unintended consequences on health and health inequalities and fostering opportunities to improve environmental sustainability, health and health equity – achieving a “triple-win”. More details can also be found in an explanatory scientific journal article, which includes an example of how the model works in practice.

Value Proposition:
The need for analysis and action across the interrelated domains of human behaviors and lifestyles, environmental sustainability, health and inequality is increasingly apparent. Currently, these areas are often not considered in conjunction when developing policies or interventions, introducing the potential for suboptimal or conflicting outcomes. The INHERIT model has been developed within the EU-funded project INHERIT as a tool to guide thinking and intersectoral action towards changing the behaviors and lifestyles that play such an important role in today’s multidisciplinary challenges. The model integrates ecological public health and behavioral change models, emphasizing inequalities and those parts of the causal process that are influenced by human behaviors and lifestyles.
