INTERPLAN Integrated Operation Planning Tool for the Pan-European Network

Result description

This tool is defined as a methodology consisting of a set of functions (grid equivalents, control functions) for grid operation planning. It addresses a significant number of grid operation planning challenges of the current and the future 2030+ EU power grid from the perspective of the transmission grid, the distribution grid, and with a particular focus on the transmission-distribution interface. In this sense, the main goal of the tool is to achieve the operation planning of an integrated grid from the perspective of a TSO or a DSO through efficiently handling intermittent RES (renewable energy sources) as well as the emerging technologies such as storage, DR (Demand Response) and EVs. In fact, the tool supports utilizing flexibility potentials coming from RES, demand side management, storage and electric mobility for system services at all grid control levels. The developed tool’s functionalities are based on established commercially available products such as Python and PowerFactory, which are widely used by the industry and academia, aiming to be readily available for immediate adoption, implementation and further research activities.

We specifically need / are looking for

We would like to share our project results with system operators (TSOs and DSOs), since the main goal of the tool is to achieve the operation planning of an integrated grid from the perspective of these grid operators, through the efficient usage of RES and emerging technologies to solve operation issues occurring at all grid levels. We would also like to collaborate with software developers / vendors to further develop the INTERPLAN tool or integrate it in their own available commercial software packages in the market.

Current stage description

The developed tool’s functionalities are based on established commercially available products such as Python and PowerFactory, which are widely used by the industry and academia, aiming to be readily available for immediate adoption, implementation and further research activities. The next step for the developed methodology would be its transformation into a software for real usage by grid operators.

The INTERPLAN tool addresses a number of operational challenges of the current and future 2030+ power grids through the control functions embedded within INTERPLAN use cases and showcases. INTERPLAN use cases address very specific operational challenges that grid operators may face in the presence of high penetration of RES and emerging technologies, whereas INTERPLAN showcases address a combination of operation challenges, thereby representing typical cases that the grid operators may need to consider for operation planning purposes.
