This KER deals with a basic technology research aiming at the delelopment of eco-friendly methods for the removal of pollutants from water. It involves the use of existing natural organic matter (NOM) as a potential source of oxidants such as hydroxyl radicals (HO°) to enhance the efficiency of current water treatment technologies. In particular, we have shown at laboratory scale that Swanee River NOM (SRNOM) can be activated with ultraviolet light (UVC) to to generate oxidant species such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which in turn strongly increased the removal of rate of glyphosate degradation. These results show that in UVC treatments NOM could favor the degradation of micropollutants through its high capacity to generate very oxidant radicals. Such a pretreatment of NOM would deserve to be further studied in combination with other engineered water treatment sytems.
