KonnektBox: A novel fog computing platform enhanced for elasticity and compute continuum paradigms

Within ELASTIC project KonnektBox is being enhanced with new software components that will make possible a novel fog computing platform within the compute continuum. It includes a data router service, connectors for local and distributed storage systems, monitoring of parameters related to non-functional requirements (communication quality, security, energy and real time), a communication middleware, and interfaces for integrating other ELASTIC framework components such as Nuvla and NFR Tools.

Current stage description

Current stage: KonnektBox is in its 3.0 version, where w.r.t. the previous version the deployment has been simplified, the data flow management and the telemetry daemon improved, and the architecture has been provided with a Tensor Flow Lite-based component that allows to compare ML/AI inference in different HW architectures.

Next stage: During the next months the focus will be on the optimization of Machine Learning and AI and on mechanisms for distributed orchestration and unattended deployment of the entire cluster of Edge nodes with techniques for self-optimization. It is intended to increase TRL level until 7 in four years.

KonnektBox proposes a micro services-based design, decoupling the components and making the overall solution generic and able to cope with a wide range of devices on the Edge. Unlike other Edge platforms on the market, KonnektBox is industry oriented. The architecture offers high flexibility to be adapted to any industrial protocol (OPC-UA, Modbus, RS-485, CAN, ZigBee, etc.) and although it is not bound to any specific OS, the tested and hardened KonnektBox-OS is a custom CentOS-based image with a private yum repository and extended security settings.
