Result description
Amongst industrial additive manufacturing applications, medical sector has always been one of the most promising ones, mainly due to high customization capability in the products. In SUPREME, idonial successfully developed both hip implants and surgery tool. The second one, being a fully functional impact tool, all its components and lock mechanisms were produced at the same time in additive manufacturing machine. For hip implant, production was optimized to fit the maximum number of units on a single printing run, in order to reduce operational costs.

Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Grants and Subsidies
customers with profile of manufacturers of medical devices, with interest in implementing additive manufacturing technologies to improve their services and portfolio of products.
- Public or private funding institutions
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Technology development for HAS and Broach Handle devices is completed. Next steps should be in line with required regulations for medical product, implants and process certification according to EU regulations. Also, finding customers interested in moving production to LPBF process for productive reasons (not very likely) or customization reasons (more likely, with AM technique each single implant or tool could be adaptaed to patient/user)
Replicable in analogue LPBF machine with transfer of knowledge on materials usage ar process considerations. Also, post processing of the parts to meet medical standards.
