Porous metal foams e.g. for electrodes or catalysis can be designed at Fraunhofer IFAM. The functionalisation is possible by applying different coating strategies with metal powder. The finish is alyways made by a heat treatment. Therefore, functionality can be ensured with long durability and high temperature stability.

Porosity, thickness and composition can be tailored by powder metallurgical processes. It is also possible to design the properties locally and create foams with a gradient.
Value Proposition:
The surface area of the foam can be enhanced extensively by powder metallurgical treatment. Therefore, high perfomance Raney Nickel foams for electrodes in hydrogen electrolysis can be fabricated.
