Non-toxic cyclodextrin derivative against a wide range of virus at micromolar concentration

We designed a multivalent sulfonate with an FDA-approved cyclodextrin core that can bind strongly to the HSPG (Heparan sulfate proteoglycan) receptor on the outer shell of the virus and eventually lead to the irreversible deformation of the virus. In-vitro and ex-vivo test showed the molecule was effective against many heparan sulfate-based viruses, including HIV, RSV, the Dengue, Zika and hepatitis, at micromolar concentration. Moreover, the molecule showed no toxicity and passed the virus resistance test. Recent tests on a model virus analogous to SARS-CoV-2 further suggested its effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2.
