Result description
Inspired by our studies for electron optical systems, we created a novel muxing and demuxing scheme for optical communications exploiting astigmatism, which normally is just an optical defect. The advantage of this scheme is that both muxing and demuxing are done directly on the light signal, without any conversion to an electric signal. This could be a new paradigm for communications.

At the current stage we demonstrated in Lab environment the functioning of the method. The next step would be to do open space distance communication.
The second, even more interesting, step would be to test quantum communication.The all-optical muxing/demuxing is indeed an idea tool for multiple channel QKD, quantum teleportation and all kind of quantum information processes.
We also need to make benchmark of real information packing, noise resistence and explore the possibility of fiiber communication. In such case we could explore special fiber design.
The patent is an idea that can be easily reproduced experimentally. For example by nanofabricated optics or by SLM.
This makes it more businness ready than what the present TRL seem to show.
The businnes potentially related to this invention is economically sustainable given teh importance of open space communication and quantum communication. It is also an added value for the EU quantum developement and is not related to any specific pullution or safety problem.
