Result description
Thanks to S&G project, KHIMOD has demonstrated cost effective transformation of electricity (from wind and solar) into renewable methane compliant with liquefied methane (LNG) requirements.
KHIMOD’s methanation unit is the core of the power-to-methane plant. It allows to store electrical energy to an LNG unit (managed by Hysytech). This allows electricity storage, quasi instantly, in a flexible way, even in remote areas without connection to the gas-grid.
A cutting edge manufacturing process of a catalytic heat exchanger reactor, developed by CEA and KHIMOD, leads to higher performances of this methanation unit which has reached up to 99.9% CO2 conversion rate and higher than 80% energy efficiency (including heat valorisation).
KHIMOD’s methanation units are field proven in different areas (such as Troia plant) and are now available for commercialisation.
Since April 2019, the Troia plant (Italy) has been producing Liquefied Renewable Gas (LRG) and reached almost 99.9% of CO2 conversion.
The partners in STORE&GO have demonstrated the successful operation of the pre-industrial power-to-methane plant. More specifically KHIMOD’s innovative heat exchanger reactor has been a key in several performances.
Flexibility of methane production to fit the fluctuation of CO2 or renewable electricity :
- Fast response time of the overall methanation unit under 5 minutes
- Stability of the CO2 conversion rate with a loss lower than 5% when CO2 and H2 flow rates are divided by 4.
High energy efficiency due to an easy to use dissipated heat at a temperature higher than 250°C.
Stability of the reaction and a very limited catalyst aging due to a very efficient thermal control in the heat exchanger reactor.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- To raise awareness and possibly influence policy
- Grants and Subsidies
- Business partners – SMEs, Entrepreneurs, Large Corporations
- Investor introductions
- Expanding to more markets /finding new customers
- Collaboration
- Venture Capital
- Other type of Investment
KHIMOD strategy is developing its Heat Exchanger Reactor (HER) which aim is to “Fight CO2” by :
- Using the KHIMOD superior HER technology ;
- Transforming directly CO2 near concentrated CO2 emitting sites into valuable asset ;
- Reducing CO2 emission.
To follow its roadmap, KHIMOD is looking for :
Public financial support for new demonstration such as:
- The scaling up
- Different sources of CO2 and Hydrogen
Investors to speed up KHIMOD development
Partners to address other catalytic reactions such as :
- Methanol
- Key Starter Material for chemistry
- DiMethyl Ether (DME)
- Formic Acid…
- Others/ No specific audience
- Public or private funding institutions
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- International Organisations (ex. OECD, FAO, UN, etc.)
- Other Actors who can help us fulfil our market potential
- Research and Technology Organisations
- Academia/ Universities
- Private Investors
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The technology readiness level of KHIMOD’s methanation units is enough to start commercialisation .
In parallel, KHIMOD is looking for new challenges in development such as higher scale demonstrators
