Prefabricated Multifunctional Façade

Result description

Gumpp&Maier with the collaboration of Eurac research, developed a new concept of wooden prefabricated multi-functional façade. It represents a key result for the plug & play deep renovation since it allows for the integration of different components, both passive (windows and shadings), active (decentralised ventilation, HVAC components) and for energy harvesting (solar thermal and photovoltaic panels). Within the project, Gumpp&Maier developed two sample prototypes with a decentralised ventilation machine integrated into the window and a solar thermal panel installed. The tests developed in Eurac laboratories assessed the effectiveness of the integration, evaluating the thermal performance and the condensation risk. The results have been the basis for the definition of the technical guidelines for designing the multifunctional prefabricated façade as applied in the demo cases. The first application was made in a building in Oslo, Norway, owned by Boligbygg. The prefab façade was provided by the local manufacturer Lindal supported by Gumpp&Maier (here with the role of engineering consultant).

Current stage description

Currently, the Prefabricated Multifunctiona Facade has been positively applied in three project demo cases. The knowledge developed will be used internally by G&M to further develop the product as well as by local constructurs who took part in the demo renovation. The renovating approach can now be applied to other buildings similar to the demo in the respective building owners’ building stocks.

·      Increased energy efficiency (due to insulation)·      Extend the life of a building facing demolition (only for deep renovation projects that include service changes, not just façade changes)·      Generally shorter renovation times on-site·      Encumbrance: Facade space required (approximately 30cm to accommodate building services > results in focus not in the city center, but in transition/fringe zones)·      A greater initial investment is required for the façade.·      Minimal disruption to residents during renovation (due to prefabrication and integration of building services)·      Higher overall durability·      Owner warranty: general contractor for system (façade and building services) rather than separate approaches for each·      Measures of sustainability (ecological, renewable, and recyclable materials, no “special waste” or high manufacturing damage)·      Aesthetic (aesthetic appearance) and architectural (modification) value·      Technical advantages include sound insulation and moisture protection.·      Prefab quality is higher (weather conditions have no effect because there is no on-site construction, and there is more space)
