Fraunhofer IKTS develops printable magnetoresistive (MR) sensors on flexible (polymer foils, paper) and rigid (ceramics) substrates. Using printing methods allows better scalability, easier integration, and reduced costs of the sensors manufacturing compared to PVD technology and lithography. This also enables large-area sensor arrays and mechanically flexible sensors. Realizing certain types of MR sensors on ceramic substrates shows potential for their applications at temperatures >200 °C. The sensors rely on the anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) effect for low magnetic fields in range of a few mT and on the large magnetoresistive effect (LMR) for high magnetic fields above 100 mT. They can be used for contactless switching, detection of motion (displacement, rotation, vibration), non-contact electric current measurements and can be fitted to air gaps in electrical machines or integrated into wearables.
