Result description
The RECYCALYSE project is expecting to achieve a triple recycling aim:
(1) Demonstrate cost effective recycling scheme for CRM (Ir, Ru and Pt), so that these PGMs can be reused into new catalyst production. This recycling and recovery process will be likewise applied to the catalysts developed in the project, based on earth-abundant materials.
(2) Recycling the whole PEMEC system, including Ti flow plates.
(3) Reactivate spent MEAs by cathodic corrosion, without removing the CRMs from the
electrodes.
These recycling aims will be obtained with the collaboration of several partners specialized in each of the targets
Increased recovery and usability: RECYCALYSE will raise the recycling rates of the PGMs to over 90% and extend it to the PEMEC system, reusing the recovered materials in the fabrication of new catalysts, as mention in the previous points. It will also be applicable to the new catalysts that will be generated within RECYCALYSE based on earth-abundant materials (Ni, Mn, Cu).
Furthermore, it will also focus on the material dismantling and Ti recovery from the flow plates. Finally, cathodic corrosion will be used for the reactivation of the spent electrodes.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- To raise awareness and possibly influence policy
- Business partners – SMEs, Entrepreneurs, Large Corporations
Influence the recycling industry through the improvement of the revalorization of the PGMs used in electrolysers production. It is also aimed to the fuel cell or electrode manufacturers, such as companies fabricating printed circuit boards, auto catalyst, copper slime.
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- Other Actors who can help us fulfil our market potential
- Research and Technology Organisations
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Partner contribution:
ACC – Focused on the recycling of the whole PEMEC system, including titanium flow plates.
TUF – Focused on the MEAs recycling, specifically PGMs.
TWI – Focused on the reactivation of the spent MEAs by cathodic corrosion.
DTI – Cost analysis of recycing scenerios
Strategy: Patent or trade secret
Scalable in Catalyst manufacturers. Revalorization of the PGMs used in electrolysers production. Replicability will also look for potential application to the fuel cell or electrode manufacturers, such as companies fabricating printed circuit boards, auto catalyst, copper slime
Ongoing activity.
