Through novel use of an induction heated tundish, larger capacity furnace, and improved powder yields, ASL has managed to reduce the energy consumption in kW/kg of product powder by 50%.

While most of the technology used in this KER is at level 7, the induction heated tundish arrangement is at a system prototype level (TRL7). Progression to TRL9 will be rapid, the next steps are modifications to the equipment and then repeat testing in a production environment.
ASL has 2 atomisers on its Sheffiled premises, and has sold numerous atomisers over its time as a company. While modifications are made based on customer requirements, if two are built to the same specification then the resulting powder is identical.
ASLs business model relies on selling atomised powders into a variety of markets. The production of these powders is sustainable – the atomiser is highly energy efficient and an internal technical team provides training and knowledge to run the equipment. The markets powders enter are typically use additive or low waste production methods. Given current trends, these markets are likely to expand. This, combined with the high energy efficiency of the atomiser lead to an environmentally sustainable business model.
