Result description
Aiming to improve the mobility services offered to residents and visitors and, to drive the way towards low carbon transportation, Rethymno invests in novel smart systems and new EV infrastructure.
The first EV chargers, web-based platforms and smart systems for better PT services (smart bus stops, travel planner app etc). parking management, logistics supply, e-vehicles sharing and real-time traffic monitoring, were introduced in Rethymno aiming to improve modal shift, to reduce traffic congestion, noise and transport-related emissions at the city center, to provide new alternatives for the last-mile routes.
The integration of systems allows to monitor and analyse the mobility patterns offering insights for improved mobility strategies, more satisfied users of the transportation system and value added services. Smart sensors incorporated in meteorological stations allows to measure the environmental impacts of the mobility measures and of the seasonal flunctuation due to tourism
Rethymno launched the first public EV charging infrastructure in the region of Crete, where 650.000 islanders live and more than 5 million tourists are accommodated per year. New parking spaces for EVs exclusively, free of charge, were launched. This helped to promote electromobility, adding the first e-cars to the city roads and kicked off a number of initiatives from neighboring Municipalities and the national Electricity Distribution Network operator towards a regional EV charging network.
A new SMART Car Parking Management System will provide real-time info of parking availability, substantially reducing the congestion caused by drivers searching for a space.
A web based platform to manage freight delivery based on demand and supply of goods in the historic city center where numerous hotels, restaurants, shops are located, is ongoing.
11 thermal cameras monitor real time the city traffic in compliance with GDPR. New model consisted by meteorological stations integrating environmental sensors monitor air pollutants, noise level and microclimate conditions. Installed next to the thermal cameras enable cross-correlation of traffic, tourism related traffic and environmental impacts
