Result description
High frequency measurements to enable aquaculture farmers to protect their stock, to allow water managers to obtain more insight in the ecological status, to provide bathing water information for public health and a coupling with new techniques such as monitoring with satellites…. a WISPstation does all of these!
What does a WISPstation do?
Based on the colour of the surface water, it determines the most important bio-physical water quality parameters, such as chlorophyll, cyanobacteria pigment, suspended matter, presence of scums and transparency. The measurement frequency can be adjusted, for example every 15 minutes. Because of this high frequency, the insights in the ecological processes can be increased significantly. Because of the direct availability of the results, alerts can be issued or additional measurements can be taken immediately.
Properties:
- Chlorophyll-a, cyanobacteria pigment, suspended matter, scums, transparency and colour. Reflectance (350-900 nm)
- Data directly available
- Autonomous, weather proof
- Solar panel
- Data transfer via 3G or Wifi
- Automatic quality control (in the cloud)
- Connections to your data management software (API)
Options
The WISPstation can be combined with satellite imagery, to deliver an enormous spatial insight in water quality of a water body. Its data can also be used as input to e.g. ecological models.

- Private Investors
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The WISPstation has gone through TRLs 1-7. Nine prototype WISPstations have been applied in the field in EOMORES and TAPAS and other test cases for months to about 2 years. The WISPstation is being sold as is. Next steps are to demonstrate its impacts and benefits for monitoring to potential users, obtain qualifications, and to finalise the production version to be ready for mass production.
Our businessplan includes the roll out of a network of distributors world-wide.
WISPstations are produced and calibrated according to precies protocols, so that the instruments as well as their measurements are the same.
There already is a large market, and the market for automated instruments for water quality is growing, because of the rising request for sustainablility, for monitoring of water quality (SGDs, Green Deal) and because of the effects of climate change (e.g. increasing risks for harmful algae blooms). It produces data for all these objectives and is sustainable in itself: the WISPstation measures with its own solar panel, and monitoring doesn’t require toxins such as various laboratorium measurements do.
