Digital Solutions Business Mission in Japan

Description

This Call for Expression of Interest targets European SMEs and clusters working in digital technologies to participate in a business mission to Japan, organised by the EU–Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation.

Selected participants will join a dedicated EU pavilion at CEATEC 2026, one of Asia’s largest digital innovation trade fairs held in Tokyo (Makuhari Messe).

The mission aims to:

  • Support EU SME internationalisation in Japan
  • Facilitate business matchmaking with Japanese companies, institutions, and investors
  • Promote EU digital technologies in the Japanese market
  • Strengthen EU–Japan industrial and technological cooperation
  • Provide structured market access support including pitching, networking, and exhibition opportunities

Funding Amount

What is funded / covered:

  • Exhibition space at CEATEC within EU-Japan Centre booth
  • Support staff and interpreters on-site
  • Translation and printing of company materials
  • Access to pitching and B2B matchmaking sessions
  • Pre-departure training and webinars
  • Hotel accommodation during mission (for selected participants)

What is NOT covered:

  • Flights to/from Japan
  • Local transport and meals
  • Personal travel expenses

Additional condition:

  • A €1,000 refundable deposit is required to confirm participation (refunded after participation survey)

Submission Deadline

  • Application Deadline: 18 June 2026

Submission Conditions

  • Applicant must be an SME or cluster
  • Based in:
    • EU Member State, or
    • Country associated with the Single Market Programme (COSME strand)
  • Must operate in eligible digital technology sectors
  • Must commit to full participation in CEATEC programme
  • Must have English proficiency (recommended B2+)
  • One representative per organisation
  • Selection is competitive and based on:
    • relevance to Japan market
    • technological fit
    • applicant profile and strategy for Japan

Eligible Types of Businesses

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Start-ups (if SME-eligible)
  • Cluster organisations
  • Digital technology providers, including:
    • AI companies
    • IoT / edge computing firms
    • cybersecurity providers
    • industrial software developers
    • deep tech SMEs

Eligible Countries

  • European Union Member States
  • Countries associated with the Single Market Programme (COSME strand)

Expected Outcome

Participating SMEs are expected to:

  • Establish commercial partnerships in Japan
  • Generate qualified business leads and sales opportunities
  • Enter or expand in the Japanese digital technology market
  • Strengthen visibility in Asia’s innovation ecosystem
  • Gain market intelligence on regulation, procurement, and business culture
  • Build long-term EU–Japan cooperation links

The mission targets SMEs active in advanced digital technologies, including:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing
  • Cybersecurity and data protection
  • Industrial digitalisation software
  • Augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR)
  • Quantum technologies (emerging focus)
  • Digital solutions for industrial and public-sector applications

Activities include:

  • Exhibition at CEATEC 2026 under EU-Japan Centre booth
  • Pre-arranged B2B matchmaking meetings
  • Pitching sessions to Japanese stakeholders
  • Market intelligence and preparatory webinars
  • Networking with Japanese corporates and public institutions
