International Coordination Action

Description

The International Coordination Action programme supports coordination activities of international collaborative associations. The funding is intended for general scientific coordination and administrative management of an international collaboration, rather than for conducting scientific research itself.

The collaborative associations supported are those established within multilateral or supranational frameworks, such as organisations or initiatives linked to bodies like the EU, UN, OECD, UNESCO, or WHO. The programme aims to anchor an international coordination function in Flanders and strengthen the role of Flemish researchers in international research collaborations.

Funding Amount

  • Maximum annual funding: €75,000 per year.
  • Total Funding Available: The Flemish Government provides €700,000 annually for this initiative, within budgetary possibilities.
  • Project duration: 3 years, with the possibility of renewal.

Eligible Costs

Funding may be used for:

  • Administrative staff involved in coordination activities.
  • Coordination-related operational costs.
  • International travel costs.
  • Data management and dissemination activities.
  • Development of online platforms or portals for the collaboration.

Funding cannot be used for research activities or costs already covered by other funding programmes.

Submission Details

  • Call opens: January 2026
  • Submission deadline: 1 April 2026 (17:00)
  • Evaluation: June 2026
  • Announcement of results: July 2026
  • Project start date: 1 January 2027

Submission Conditions

  • Applications must be submitted via email to the FWO using the official application form.
  • Applicants must update their FWO e-portal profile before submitting a proposal.
  • Applications are evaluated by the Cross-Domain Panel (CDP), which provides recommendations to the FWO Board of Trustees, responsible for the final decision.
  • Applicants must comply with the Research Integrity Clause.

Eligible Types of Organisations

Applicants must be:

  • Independent academic staff members (≥50% appointment) at one of the following Flemish institutions:
    • Flemish universities
    • Evangelical Protestant Faculty (Leuven)
    • Faculty for Protestant Theology (Brussels)
    • Antwerp Management School
    • Vlerick Business School
    • Institute of Tropical Medicine
    • Hogere Zeevaartschool
    • Flemish schools of arts recognised by decree

Applicants must also have been invited by a multilateral or supranational organisation or consortium to take up a coordination role.

Eligible Countries

  • Belgium (Flanders) as the host location for the coordination function.
  • The collaborative association itself must operate internationally within multilateral or supranational frameworks.

Expected Outcome

  • Strengthened coordination of international research collaborations involving Flemish institutions.
  • Long-term anchoring of international coordination functions in Flanders.
  • Improved management, dissemination, and communication of international scientific collaborations.
  • Enhanced visibility and integration of Flemish research within international scientific networks.

Scope

The call supports activities related to coordination and management of international collaborative research networks or associations, including:

  • General coordination and management of the collaborative association.
  • Administrative management of the international partnership.
  • Data management and dissemination activities.
  • Development and maintenance of portal websites or digital platforms supporting the collaboration.

The funding cannot be used for actual scientific research activities; it is strictly intended for coordination functions within international research collaborations.
