KIC – Cooling needs in homes: effects, mitigation, adaptation

Description

This KIC mission call focuses on the increasing cooling demand in residential buildings in the Netherlands, driven by climate change, urbanisation, and changing building characteristics.

The call aims to fund interdisciplinary, impact-driven research that improves understanding of cooling needs and develops sustainable, cost-effective solutions to ensure a healthy and comfortable indoor climate while limiting energy use.

It is part of the broader KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Covenant) programme, supporting public-private partnerships addressing societal challenges.

Funding Amount

  • Total budget: € 7.000.000.
  • Funding amount per project: € 600.000 - € 2.300.000 of NWO funding.
  • NWO finances maximally 80% of the total project budget; the rest of the funding must be contributed by the compulsory co-funding.
  • NWO never funds less than 50% of the total project budget.
  • Proposed project duration: at most 6 years.

Submission Deadlines

  • Deadline for submitting a request for the review of foreign organisations: 26 May 2026, 14:00
  • Final proposal deadline: 23 June 2026, 14:00

Submission Conditions

  • Proposals must be submitted by a consortium
  • Mandatory involvement of:
    • Knowledge institutions
    • Public and/or private partners (co-funders)
  • Co-funding required (cash and/or in-kind)
  • Emphasis on:
    • Interdisciplinary collaboration
    • Societal relevance and implementation potential

Eligible Types of Applicants / Organisations

Consortium-based participation including:

  • Universities and research institutions
  • Companies (including SMEs)
  • Public authorities / policymakers
  • Societal organisations

Eligible Countries

  • Primarily Netherlands-based institutions and stakeholders
  • International partners may participate as consortium members

Expected Outcome

  • Improved insight into cooling demand and its drivers
  • Evidence-based strategies to reduce and manage cooling demand
  • Development of:
    • Sustainable cooling solutions
    • Policy-relevant knowledge and tools
  • Contribution to:
    • Energy transition (integration of heating & cooling)
    • Climate adaptation and resilience
    • Healthy indoor environments

Scope

Projects must address current and future cooling needs in homes, with a strong focus on:

  • Mapping local cooling demand in residential buildings
  • Understanding:
    • Effects of overheating and heat stress
    • Impact on health, energy use, labour, and society
  • Developing:
    • Mitigation strategies (reducing cooling demand)
    • Adaptation strategies (meeting remaining demand sustainably)
  • Identifying scalable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient solutions
  • Considering behavioural and socio-economic factors (e.g. residents’ behaviour, inequality in access to cooling)
