NWO Hop-On Call for Proposals for Researchers Based in Ukraine 2025

Description

The NWO Hop-On Call for Researchers Based in Ukraine 2025 is a partnership initiative between NWO and the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU). It aims to support Ukrainian researchers by integrating them into ongoing NWO-funded projects in the Netherlands, thereby strengthening international collaboration and professional networks.

Rather than funding new standalone projects, the call enables existing NWO project teams to “hop-on” a Ukrainian researcher to their consortium.

Funding Amount

  • Total funding available: €480,000
  • Funding per project (per Ukrainian researcher):
    • €1,250 per month (including material costs)
    • Additional €375 total for materials per researcher
  • Duration of funding:
    • 6 to 24 months

Submission Deadlines

  • Opening date: 20 January 2026
  • Final deadline: 23 June 2026 (14:00 CET)
  • Applications accepted on a rolling basis (first come, first served) until budget exhaustion
  • Additional condition:
    • Application must be submitted at least 2 months before the intended start date

Submission Conditions

  • Applications must be submitted by:
    • Dutch Principal Investigators (PIs) of ongoing NWO-funded projects
  • Ukrainian researcher must:
    • Act as co-applicant
    • Provide required documents (PhD diploma, employment proof, letter of support, CV)
  • Submission via:
    • NWO ISAAC system
  • Funding is granted under:
    • First come, first served principle

Eligible Types of Applicants / Organisations

Dutch side:

  • Researchers leading ongoing NWO-funded projects (PIs)

Ukrainian side:

  • Individual researchers who:
    • Hold a PhD (or equivalent)
    • Are employed at:
      • Ukrainian universities
      • Public research organisations
    • Are based and working in Ukraine

Expected Outcome

  • Strengthened collaboration between Dutch and Ukrainian researchers
  • Enhanced integration of Ukrainian researchers into international research networks
  • Increased knowledge exchange and capacity development
  • Contribution to continuity of Ukrainian research activities during challenging conditions

Scope

  • Add one Ukraine-based researcher to an ongoing NWO-funded project
  • Support:
    • Knowledge exchange and collaboration
    • Mentorship and capacity building
    • Strengthening international research networks
  • The Ukrainian researcher participates as a co-applicant within the existing project

 Important:

  • The call does not fund new research projects, but extends existing ones
