EU and Canada conclude negotiations for association to Horizon Europe

At the Canada-EU Summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the successful conclusion of negotiations for Canada's association with Pillar II of Horizon Europe, the EU's primary funding program for research and innovation.

This marks a significant step in fostering mutual collaboration. The Association Agreement is expected to be signed in 2024, allowing Canadian researchers and organizations to receive funding under Pillar II, focused on global challenges like climate, energy, digital economy, and health, with a budget of €53.5 billion.

This association represents a deep collaboration, enabling Canadian entities to participate on equal terms with EU Member States in calls under Pillar II. Formal relations between the EU and Canada in research and innovation date back to 1996, and this agreement signifies an ongoing commitment to shared research priorities and common interests.

Horizon Europe, with a budget of €95.5 billion for 2021-2027, is open to global participation, providing opportunities for entities from associated countries to collaborate and access funds on par with EU Member States.
